LiPaPo 3: Diversity

Hello all~ this is the LiPaPo series, standing for Little Pagan Post. Every day I will post a short little post, exploring an aspect of my beliefs and practices. I hope you enjoy them ~ kitty hugs to all~ Joouna

Yesterday I wrote about Polytheism and the diversity of divine and spiritual beings, but today let me return to the topic of diversity: this time on the physical plane. The diversity I wish to talk about is the diversity of the human species.

Across the globe, there can be found groups of genetic, cultural, lingual and religious differences. What I have observed is that many times people either start fighting over these differences, asserting that one is better than the other, or argue that “we are all human!” and try to fit everyone under one umbrella. The first option I do not agree with, but also not the second one. Yes, we are indeed all the same species and that is great, but I sometimes have the feeling that efforts are made to homogenise the human population on the premise of tolerance and inclusivity.

I believe that we should not see differences as a “bad thing” but we should embrace them, and also preserve them. It is a great loss when languages and cultures become extinct, and a long line of ancestors are forgotten by their children. By all means we should keep growing into the future. But we should also stay connected with our deep roots.

Like trees.

LiPaPo 2: Polytheism

Hello all~ this is the LiPaPo series, standing for Little Pagan Post. Every day I will post a short little post, exploring an aspect of my beliefs and practices. I hope you enjoy them ~ kitty hugs to all~ Joouna

My beliefs can be categorised as “hard polytheism”, which means that I believe in multiple deities, and I believe that they are separate beings, and not just different faces of the same entity. The reasoning behind this is that physical life also manifests itself in so many different forms… there are so many different birds, fish, reptiles, mammals… even within the same species there are many differences, a beautiful diversity. Why should spiritual beings be any different? I believe that the life energy, as well as the divine energy, all stem from a single source, but their forms are diverse, and numerous if not endless. We may encounter many deities, but also other spiritual beings such as angels, guardians, guides, messengers…

Worth to note, however, are cultural similarities. There is a possibility that the some same deities or other spiritual being was encountered by multiple cultures, who addressed them with different names appropriate to their language. This could explain striking similarities in some mythology across cultures. If that is the case, I do not believe it prompts the search for “who got it right?”. Instead, go with the name that resonates most. On the other hand, this is pure speculation. It is also possible that the deities of different cultures are indeed all different, each watching over their people. On this matter I am undecided as both options sound feasible.

LiPaPo 1: Offerings

Hello all~ this is the LiPaPo series, standing for Little Pagan Post. Every day I will post a short little post, exploring an aspect of my beliefs and practices. I hope you enjoy them ~ kitty hugs to all~ Joouna

Across many Pagan spiritual traditions there can be found the notion of giving offerings to deities or spirits, in order to show respect and devotion. Often the offering is made up of food and/or drink, although occasionally it can be something else too. The offering is often laid out on an altar, or burned, in order for it to reach the spiritual world.

I think the nicest way to give offerings is to give them through nature. Deities and spirits show themselves to me most of the time through nature, and associate with certain animals or plants. Therefore, when I give offerings to a deity or spirit, I do that by feeding it (appropriate food) to their animals, or watering and caring for their plants. This way, not only does it serve a spiritual purpose but it also does good to a fellow creature on the physical level. To me, the unity of the physical and the spiritual world are very important, and this practice brings a lot of joy and fulfillment to me ^_^

To sight or not to sight?

Ahhhh~ exams are over again and finally a weekend where I do whatever I want~ *dangles feet in lazy manner* Well actually I’m not being lazy at all. Yesterday I had finally time for an archery training of proper length (4h+ shooting, yay!). Before, I mounted my aiming sight on my recurve and decided that I will use them to add some precision…

…well, that did not work out because I guess I am, no matter what modern recurve bow I shoot with, a trad archer to the core xD I spent hours trying to adjust to the aiming sight and olympic anchor, with moderate success. Of course it takes longer than that to adjust to a new position but what really irked me was the aiming. All of a sudden there is this little irritating thing in my line of sight to the target. And even when I managed to set it perfectly, I would shoot best when I ignored it. I am also pretty sure I heard the disapproving voices of my archer ancestors at one time, although that may also just have been my frustration speaking through my imagination.

So, take screwdriver, remove sights system, return to my previous technique, and I beat my 25m record again :3 (we seem to be shooting constantly from 25m these days, I guess the coach realised we were lacking practice on that distance) That average of 8 is coming closer and closer ~ *beams with confidence* Soon…

Kitty hugs to all + happy shooting to all archers ~

Livin’ on a Prayer and growing doubts.

I think that ancient Bon Jovi song pretty much sums up my life right now. Guess what, it’s exam time again -_- one down, 3 to go, but that first one did not go well at all. Right now I’m studying my bottom off for the next one tomorrow, but all the while anxiety and doubts keep growing. What if I don’t make it? Well, if I don’t make it, then I will need to go through the same hassle again as after high school. Decide what I want to study, find universities, narrow the search, choose some, apply, hope to get accepted, hopefully get accepted, move, adjust, start over… pffff. I hate starting over. It’s like when you die in a game just before you finished a mission.

I want to continue what I am doing now because it is interesting! I also happened to turn 20 yesterday and I really want to grow, move on, not be stuck in this phase anymore… At the same time I have also grown a lot spiritually since I started on my path, and would love to help others to do the same and get in touch with the Divine as well… not exactly what to do with an engineering degree is it…

…I’m slightly frustrated right now as you can see. Guess I’ll go vent it into some physical activity involving sharp projectiles, and then get back to studying.

Today, life is good.

So today we had 25m day, internal competition followed by training. Not many people came, very relaxed atmosphere… I enjoyed every moment.

the view from the shooting line.
the view from the shooting line.

I also happened to shoot consistently good (though not flawless, but good) from 25m again, and as a great comeback from the whole tradbow broken/me injured fiasco, I beat my highscore! Next aim: lets get a consistent average of 8! (at first from 18m)

My aluminium arrows unfortunately suffered the first casualty of war, arrow#2 has a shot-away nock. Oh well, it shall be fixed, the shaft is still good so it should be doable.

I’m still very much in love with my recurve, and we are constantly improving, becoming one… i’m really excited for the future.

Kitty hugs to all~
